Spartans Come Up Short

The C.H.S. football team came up just short of a victory when the visiting Pirates scored a last minute touchdown to take the lead and the game.  Both sides of the ball got off to a fantastic start for the host Spartans allowing them to build an early 12 – 0 advantage.  A few mistakes by the host team and good play by the opposition in the 2nd quarter not only allowed the Pirates to get back into the game, by halftime they were holding a 5 point advantage.  Both defenses held serve for the 3rd and most of the 4th quarters.  But the last 5 minutes were about as exciting as you will ever see on an athletic field.  The excitement started late in the 4th quarter when Dalton Dubois blocked a field goal attempt by the Pirates and  Jacen Beckman returned it to the opponents 30 yard line.  The Spartans were docked 15 yards on the play due to excessive celebration but were in business on the Pirate 45.  Two plays later the Pirate defense returned the favor by forcing a turnover which allowed them to protect their 5 point advantage. The Spartan defense stepped up once more to force a turnover on downs giving the home team one more shot with 3:30 on the clock.  Three plays and three yards had Connersville looking at a 4th and 7 with just under 2 min remaining.  Warren Toole hauled in a 10 yard pass from Kelly on 4th down to keep the drive alive and 2 plays later Kelly connected with Dylan Webber for a 55 yard score putting the Spartans up 18 – 17 with 1:25 to play.  Seth Bean caught a pass from Kelly for the 2 point conversion and extended the lead to 20-17. Unfortunately for the Spartans the Pirates had a few big plays of their own left in the tank.  They returned the ensuing kickoff to the Spartan 30 setting themselves up with another chance to put points on the board.  On their 4th play of the drive a Pirate receiver hauled in a 20 yard touchdown pass giving them the lead 24-20 and the game. The Spartan offense had one more shot at it but could not convert.  The Spartans fall to 1-2 on the season and will be on the road next Friday as they travel to South Dearborn to take on the Knights.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
