The Lady Spartans opened sectional play last night with a 43-39 win over Pendleton Heights. The Lady Spartans took control of the game early and led at both quarters in the first half. Sparked by 3 first half 3-pointers by Mikalia Taylor. The second half got off to a slow start, but the Lady Spartans righted the ship and led at the end of the third period. The fourth quarter saw Pendleton Hts. take their first lead of the game, but the Lady Spartans struck right back and pushed back in front. With about 2 minutes to go in the fourth the Lady Spartans held a 4 point lead, but an old-fashioned 3-point play cut the margin to only one, but the Lady Spartans used some good free-throw shooting, making 7 of 9 in the 4th quarter to help secure the victory for the Lady Spartans. This was the second win over Pendleton in the past 18 days having defeated them at home by 6 points on Coaches vs. Cancer night.
Scoring for the Lady Spartans went as follows:
Taylor Stephens 17 points, Mikalia Taylor 12 points, Courtney Phillips 8 points, Amanda Cobb 4 points, and Destiny Ruch 2 points.
The Lady Spartans are in action again, at the Mt. Vernon Sectional, this Friday as they take on the Lady Indians of Anderson. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 PM. Come out and support the Lady Spartans as they make their run through the IHSAA tournament trail.
