Spartans News · Spartans Struggle Early

The Spartan Football Team struggled to get things going in their favor early this past Friday resulting in a season opening loss to the visiting Richmond Red Devils.  A blocked punt on the Spartans 1st offensive series gave the Red Devils a 1st and goal inside the 10 yard line and set the tone for what would be a tough 1st half for the Spartans.  The Red Devils scored on that series and went on to put three more scores on the board in the half while limiting the Spartans to minimal offensive production.  Following the halftime break the Spartans were able to get themselves back into the game and on the scoreboard but the 28 point 1st half deficit was too much to overcome.  In the 2nd half the Spartans were able to find the end-zone twice with Kelly getting in on a 1 yard run early in the 4th quarter and then again on a pass from Kelly to Shane Smith from 22 yards out.  Cole Martin added the extra points on both of those scores.  The Spartans added 2 points with a safety on the Red Devils next possession but could not capitalize on the following offensive series and finished the night with a 34 – 16 loss.  The Spartans will be in action again this Friday as they travel to Franklin County in a rivalry match-up with the Wildcats.  Kick-Off is set for 7:00 p.m.
