An early lead and a late game rally weren’t enough to get the Spartans their first win of the season. An opening drive that went 80 yards, took 6 minutes, and resulted in a Landon Cerqua touchdown was a fantastic way for the red and white to begin the homecoming contest at Spartan Field. However, a quick response from the visiting Panthers and a few stalled drives by the Spartans had them trailing 14-7 at the half. Jennings County struck 1st in the 2nd half scoring on a long pass play to increase their lead by 7. Trailing 21-7 early in the 4th quarter the Spartans put together a solid drive mixing run with pass and scoring on a 4 yard pass play from Kelly to Myers. On the ensuing kick-off Cole Martin executed a perfect onside kick which was recovered by Carter Deboard. The drive that followed stalled when a reverse pass from Lynch to Shafer on 4th and 15 was marked just short of the line to gain and the ball was turned over on downs. The following drive by the Panthers resulted in a touchdown and put the game out of reach for the Spartans. Despite the loss Several players had big nights and made great plays. Cole Martin and his coverage teams were able to pin the Jennings County offense inside the 20 on 3 different occasions. Evan Shafer had his best offensive performance of the season hauling in 6 balls for 105 yards. Gavin Lynch picked up a combined 109 all purpose yards and senior offensive linemen Alex Edwards and Carter James continued to lead up front. Sophomore linebacker Mitch Blakley was heavily involved in the defenses success. He made a great tackle late in the game stuffing a run on a 4th down conversion attempt. Chad Owens and Braxton Myers kept the potent Panther passing game in check most of the evening with several pass break-ups and some big time hits. Freshman Defensive lineman Gavin Jones and Cody Hauger were impressive playing well above their grade level. The Spartans will need their progress to continue when they travel to St. Leon next friday to take on the top ranked East Central Trojans. Kick-Off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
