7th Red Boys Basketball team fell to a big and talented Centerville Bulldog squad in the championship game of the Connersville Invite Saturday afternoon. The Spartans struggled to get things going early as they were outscored 8-2 in the opening period. The second period was a different story as Connersville settled in and connected on number of great looks to cut the Bulldog lead to just three at the half, 18-15. I was really proud of how our boys reacted after getting down early as they made several adjustments to keep the game tight throughout a lot of the game. A couple of lapses on the defensive side of the ball along with not getting the ball to fall through the iron on a number of great looks throughout the game was just too much going against a strong team. The Spartans fought hard the second half but could not come within reach of the Bulldogs who picked up the 36-27 win to take home the trophy.
Connersville played Rushville in the morning game and came up with a 40-18 victory to advance to the championship. Connersville took care of business on both ends of the floor as they picked up a quick 16-0 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 24-0 at halftime. Connersville never looked back from there and picked up the decisive victory.
Scoring on the day for the Spartans was Keegan Hurley and Zaine Bentley with 19 points each followed by Paolo Amora and Gavin Brannon with 8 and 7 respectively. Hunter Allen chipped in 5 while Aiden Gibbs contributed 3. Logan Young, Maxwell Wright and Maddox Greenwell added 2 each.
The Spartans are now 6-3 on the year and host South Dearborn on Tuesday at Spartan Arena.
