In the first action of the night, the 7th Red Boys Basketball team welcomed the Franklin County Wildcats to Spartan Arena and came away with a 40-22 victory. The first quarter was back and forth for a while before the Spartans came away with a slim 7-4 lead. Connersville pounced on the Cats in the second and third periods though outscoring their opponents 29-11. Franklin County tried to claw their way back into the game but never did pull close enough to give any trouble to the Spartans.
Leading the way for Connersville was Zaine Bentley with 19 points and seven rebounds followed by Keegan Hurley with 10. Logan Young also chipped in 6 points and 7 boards to help the cause while Gavin Brannon stepped up and added 5 points as well. Paolo Amora played great on-the-ball defense against the Wildcat’s top scorer as Brandt Lykins and the rest of the Spartans played outstanding help defense all night. Defensively the boys played better as a team than we have all year. Seeing how they continued to frustrate a great scorer in Franklin County’s Blake Stephenson throughout the game was a great accomplishment during the Spartan’s last contest of the year.
The 7th Grade Red Spartans ended the season with a 9-3 record and played their best basketball the second half of the year as they won their last seven contests.
The 8th Boys Red Basketball team ended up being a tougher contest than Connersville wanted as the Wildcats gave the Spartans all they could handle. The Spartans came out and picked up a quick 9-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and played even in the second period as they took a 15-9 lead into the half. Connersville extended their lead in the third as they outpaced Franklin County to take a 22-13 lead before heading into an exciting final period. In the fourth quarter a couple poor decisions offensively and shooting 20% from the free-throw line allowed the Wildcats to make a late charge to pull within 2 with just a few seconds remaining. Franklin County had a tough look for the win as time expired but fortunately for the Spartans the ball rimmed in and fell out as all Spartan fans exhaled a sigh of relief with a 25-23 win. We really would have liked to handle the end of the game a little better and go ahead and win the game from the foul line but that just isn’t how it went tonight. Building the lead throughout the first three quarters came into play until the very last second tonight and I was proud of the boys for that.
Leading the way for the Spartans was Griffin Wilson with 10 points followed by Zander McHenry and Conner Graves with 5 and 4 points, respectively. Kolton DeBoard, Jayden Granger and Jordan Williams each added 2 points as well for the victory.
The 8th Grade Spartans will see their last action of the season on Monday as they host Greenfield at Spartan Arena.
